Why Cool Roofs?

From large commercial to small residential facilities, designers, builders, owners and regulators are showing increasing awareness of the radiative properties of the roof as a key contributor to building thermal performance. Thanks to this growing market awareness of the benefits of "cool" roofing, driven in part by utility and green industry promotion and code bodies, cool roofing is becoming one of the fastest-growing sectors of the marketplace. How Can the Cool Roof Rating Council Help?

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) is a non-profit association comprised primarily of roofing product manufacturers and sellers and their trade associations. The Council was established in 1998 to implement and promote fair, accurate, and credible radiative performance rating systems for roof surfaces. The centerpiece of the CRRC is its third-party testing and rating program that provides credible reflectance and emissivity data. CRRC standardizes and assures the quality of the rating process-we don't establish or enforce performance thresholds. EPA's Energy Star program is complementary in that it promotes only products meeting certain performance levels. We also work to promote the use of our Product Rating Program by designers, owners, and regulators. In short, CRRC looks out for its members' interests at the same time it helps to facilitate the development of a cool-roof-savvy marketplace. Roofing technologies are increasingly included in energy efficiency standards proceedings, and specifiers are turning to CRRC's product rating database to help make purchasing decisions. The CRRC offers two ways to participate:

Become a Licensed Seller or Other Manufacturer
As has already happened in California, a growing number of jurisdictions and programs are expected to cite the CRRC rating system as a means of verifying roof product radiative performance. By becoming a Licensed Seller or Other Manufacturer you will be eligible to participate in the CRRC Product Rating Program.

Become a Member
Whether or not you currently have products you wish to rate, you can become a CRRC Member. Membership brings several tangible benefits to your company. CRRC can help you keep on top of the latest developments affecting the industry, and to respond effectively to the needs of your customers and specifiers.
