US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
The LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary standard for building performance and sustainability. Please visit www.usgbc.org/LEED for more information on LEED programs.
LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC) Version 2.2 gives credit for a cool roof under SS Credit 7.2: Heat Island Effect: Roof. LEED-NC credits a roof that has a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) value greater or equal to the value in the table below:
Roof Type |
Slope |
SRI
|
Low-Sloped Roof |
</= 2:12 |
78 |
Steep-Sloped Roof |

LEED now has an SRI calculator which can be found at the following link:
http://www.usgbc.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=1447 . Click
on the NC2.2 SS link and then open the file for Credit 7.2.
The Cool Roof Rating Council does not calculate SRI or publish it in the Rated Product Directory. However, it can be calculated for a given product using the Solar Reflectance and Thermal Emittance values from the CRRC Rated Products Directory. SRI is calculated according to ASTM E1980.
LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Version 2 gives credit for a cool roof under SS Credit 6.2: Heat Island Reduction: Roof. LEED-EB credits a roof that is an ENERGY STAR® -compliant, high-reflectance and high emissivity roofing material that has a minimum emissivity of 0.9 when tested in accordance with ASTM 408.
